Platinum is widely used as electrodes in metal finishing industries, having special chemical & physical properties like high corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity and catalytic nature. Being a very expensive metal, instead of using solid form, platinum is deposited on the surface of titanium or niobium, occasionally on molybdenum by micron level layer. Metal finishing and surface coating techniques are used for many applications, from new technologies and processes to traditional manufacturing, where the surface of the metal is subjected to a number of harsh processes.

What is Metal Finishing?

Metal finishing is an all-encompassing term used to describe the process of placing some type of metal coating on the surface of a metallic part, typically referred to as a substrate. It can also involve the implementation of a process for cleaning, polishing or otherwise improving a surface. Metal finishing often consists of electroplating, which is the process of depositing metal ions onto a substrate via an electric current. In fact, metal finishing and plating are sometimes used interchangeably.

Metal finishing is the process of changing the surface of an object, for the purpose of improving its appearance and/or durability. Metal finishing is related to electroplating, which is the production of a thin surface coating of the metal upon another by electrodeposition.

The main purpose of metal finishing is to give enhanced properties to various substrates (the metal that is to be coated or finished). It can also be used to give decorative coatings to metals.

Metals used in engineering and manufacturing, often do not have the necessary strength, durability or resistance to outside factors needed for its application. To enable the metal to be used, a coating or finish is applied so that the metal’s properties are altered to give a better performance.
