The key factor for a quality water ionizer is the material of the electrodes (Platinised Anodes and Platinised Cathodes). Most good ionizers on the market use electrodes made of platinum plated with grade 1 titanium. Titanium will not dissolve in your ionized water.

How does an alkaline water ionizer work?

A water ionizer works on the simple principle of electrolysis. Any type of water ionizer has two electrodes put into a container having two chambers separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The two electrodes – positive and negative, are put into two separate chambers and current (4 Volt per cell) is passed through them. Ionization process takes place on passing of the current through the electrodes. The dissolved minerals get attracted either to the positive or negative electrode and gets stick to their surfaces. Thus one of the chambers will have acidic water while the other will have alkaline water. The alkaline water is for consumption purpose, whereas the acidic water is for disinfecting or sterilizing purposes.

Anode Side: Platinum Plated Titanium Anode

Positively charged ions gather at the negative electrode to create reduced water, which concentrates available alkaline minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium from the source water. This alkaline ionized water is drawn for drinking and cooking, through the main stainless steel spout.

Cathode Side: Platinum Plated Titanium Cathode

Negatively charged ions gather at the positive electrode to make oxidized water, which concentrates acid minerals such as nitrates, sulfides, chlorides, and fluorides from the source water. This acid ionized water has a myriad of external uses. It is discharged into the sink.

Platinum is a precious metal having very good physical and chemical properties. Tiaano manufacturing and supplying platinized anodes are widely used for electroplating and electro winning industrial applications. Electroplating is used in a variety of industries for coating metal objects with a thin layer of a different metal. This electrochemical process requires anodes. There are as many types of anode compositions as there are applications. Platinized Titanium and platinised Niobium Electroplating anodes offer numerous benefits.

Electroplating anodes are used to create products in many industries, including the hydraulic industry. The most common uses for electroplated products are chrome-plated oil pump auger flights, hydraulic cylinders, conveyor flights, sheets and tanks where it would be impractical or too expensive to make the item entirely out of the plating metal.

What is Electroplating?

Electroplating is used to coat certain metals with a thin layer of a pure metal, like silver or gold, copper, zinc or any of several alloys. During the process, an electric current passes through a solution known as an electrolyte. The composition of the electrolyte depends on the desired coating. The item being electroplated (cathode) is immersed into the electrolyte solution, as is the plating anode. The two are then connected to an electrical current source, by connecting the positive end to the plating anode and the negative to the item being to be plated. Once current flows through the system positively charged metal ions become attracted to the negatively charged item, thereby coating the item with the desired finish.

PLATINISED TITANIUM SLOTTED ANODE FOR ELECTRO CHEMICAL PROCESS

Electrochemical process requires anodes. Mainly Platinized Titanium or Platinised Niobium Anodes. Platinised titanium anodes combine the excellent electro chemical characteristics of platinum with the good corrosion qualities of titanium.

Platinised titanium is titanium that has been plated / coated with a very thin layer of platinum, normally by electro deposition process. The purpose of it is to provide a conducting medium that will not react with electrolytes. Platinum is very inert and doesn't readily react electrochemically, so you can do some very good electrochemistry with it. Titanium is used because of its high conductivity and ease in plating under electro deposition process. Furthermore, if the platinum is porous and the titanium is exposed, the titanium will passivate and soon stop interfering with any electrochemistry going on at the electrode.

Titanium - activated by a platinum or a mixed metal oxide (MMO) layer with semiconducting properties - forms an insoluble anode. Both types of anodes are widely used for very different electrochemical applications (electro winning, electro synthesis, electro analysis, electroplating (mainly Automobile parts plating anode, Copper foil plating anode, Hard chrome plating anode, Rotogravure cylinder plating anode, Chromium plating anode, Wire plating anodes, Copper plating anodes, Gold plating anodes, Nickel plating anodes) cathodic corrosion  protection (ICCP) (Mainly seawater and limited space area), disinfection (mainly Electro Seawater Chlorination, Ionization) Gray Water Treatment, Sewage Treatment and waste water treatment, Effluent Treatment and others). The property of titanium to passivate when anodically polarized is the reason for its use as anode base. The activation must be corrosion-resistant against the electrolyte and must remain active.

Platinised titanium anodes are very frequently used as expanded mesh anodes due to their excellent practice characteristics of high throwing power, good electrolyte exchange, compact construction, low weight etc.

Platinum Plated Titanium Anodes for Research and Development

Tiaano offer Platinum plated Anode and cathodes (Electrodes) for various research and developments. Many article provides a history of platinised anodes by reviewing innovations in the chlor-alkali industry, electroplating, electro galvanizing, electro winning etc.... These anodes are attractive for numerous reasons (e.g., long life and educed energy consumption), but they must still overcome the hurdle of cost to gain wider acceptance for applications in the various process industries.

Chemical Behavior of Platinum and Titanium:-

Platinum is preferred on an anode's outer surface because it is highly resistant to corrosion and can ensure current flow in most electrolyte media without leading to the formation of an insulating layer on itself. Because it doesn’t corrode, it doesn’t produce corrosion products and hence the consumption rate is very low.

Platinum is inert in fused salts and acids, whereas it is dissolved in aqua regia. There is no risk of hydrogen embrittlement. It is one of the few rare metals that perfectly resist chlorides of seawater.

Titanium shows reasonably good resistance to a marine environment (seawater in particular). It does not react with concentrated (80%) solutions of metallic chlorides. However, it is susceptible to attack by hydrofluoric acid (HF) and hot hydrochloric acid (HCl) of higher concentrations. Even hydrogen peroxide and hot nitric acid can attack titanium. Oxidizing agents normally do not attack titanium because it readily forms a protective oxide coating. However, non-oxidizing substances such as sulfuric acid (above 5% concentration) and phosphoric acid (above 30%) can attack titanium. From a hydrogen embrittlement point of view, titanium fares better than tantalum as an anode material.

Advantages of Platinized Titanium Anodes:-

Platinum has the advantages of electro chemical inertness, mechanical strength, workability and favorable electrical conductivity. However, it is prohibitively expensive. Development of platinum on titanium and platinum on tantalum (plated) materials has opened up the feasibility of using these for anode materials for Electro Plating, metal finishing and cathodic protection systems in critical applications.
