Titanium and titanium alloys find extensive use in electrolytic cells. For example, in electrolytic cells useful in the Production of Bromine, evolution of chlorine, alkali metal hydroxide, and hydrogen, the anodes are frequently platinum coated titanium anodes.

Similarly, in electrolytic cells for the production of Bromine, the anodes are frequently platinum plated titanium anodes while the cathodes are uncoated titanium.

One problem encountered in the use of titanium electrodes, especially as cathodes, is the uptake of hydrogen by the titanium and the consequent formation of titanium hydride within the electrodes. Another problem is the high overvoltage of hydrogen evolution on titanium cathodes.

It has now been found that the rate of titanium hydride formation may be reduced and the hydrogen overvoltage may be reduced if the titanium is present as an alloy with a rare earth metal.

Platinum is a noble metal hence we used platinum as an anode in electrolysis process. Platinum is used in electrochemical cells because it is resistant to oxidation- it will not easily react, which makes in excellent as an electrode. Platinized anodes can be operated at very high current densities. 100 Amperes per square foot are typical. All of the current flows from the platinum coated portion of the anode surface. However, if this coating is damaged, current may also flow from the substrate material resulting in its premature failure. The primary limitation of platinized anodes is that the oxide film on the substrate can break down if excessive anode-to-electrolyte voltages are encountered. The practical limit for platinized titanium is 12 volts. Platinized niobium can be used at potentials as high as 100 volts.

Platinum is the most effective metal for any electro dialysis process due to its current conducting property. Platinum being the most expensive material rational utilization of Platinum for the greater value ensures economical solution. Platinum covered Anodes is none but a rational utilization of platinum by plating limited quantity on to titanium to achieve the same result as using platinum metal.

The platinized anode is characterized by its three outstanding effects as an electrode material:

1. It is stable, corrosion resistant and can be used in various media.

2. For the oxygen evolution reaction, the over potential is very high

3. For the hydrogen evolution reaction, the over potential is very low.

What is Electrodialysis:-

The electro-dialysis process is a combination of electrochemical process and dialysis diffusion process. Driven by an external DC electric field, the anion and cation move to the anode (Platinum covered Anode). Cathode (Platinum covered Cathode) respectively via the selective permeability of the ion exchange membrane. The cation will pass through the cation exchange membrane and the anion will pass through the anion exchange membrane. In the process of ion migration, if the fixed charge of the membrane is opposite to the charge of the ion. The ion will pass through; if their charges are the same, the ion is rejected, so achieves the diluted solution, concentrated solution, and purified solution.
