TITANIUM/PLATINUM CLAD NIOBIUM MESH FOR GOLD PLATING

The platinum clad niobium mesh is manufactured from a solid niobium sheet that has platinum of the specified thickness, mechanically clad to one or both surfaces.  The platinum clad niobium sheet is then "expanded" to form the mesh which has a stiffness that somewhat greater than aluminium window screen.  This leaves the inside edges of the mesh openings as exposed niobium which may be subject to anodization in some solutions, in this case the electrical "throwing power" of the electrode, (electrical conductivity with the solution), is maintained through the platinum cladding which maintains a liquid tight contact with the niobium substrate.

The niobium substrate is less rigid than the 0.030" expanded titanium and usually requires some type of framework to maintain the desired shape.  The niobium substrate is more conductive than titanium and the niobium under the platinum cladding is less likely to be affected by the solution.

Electrodeionization (EDI), also known as continuous deionization (CDI), is a hybrid separation process combining ion-exchange resins with ion-exchange membranes. The EDI gained increasing attention for removal/recovery of ions from water. There are different types of applications for the EDI on the removal and concentration of various species from Effluent streams. The aim of this paper is to give a brief overview of those studies.

Electroplating is basically the process of plating a metal onto the other by hydrolysis mostly to prevent corrosion of metal or for decorative purposes. The process uses an electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations to develop a lean coherent metal coating on the electrode. Electroplating is often applied in the electrical oxidation of anions on a solid substrate like the formation of silver chloride on silver wire to form silver chloride electrodes.

The Anode and Cathode:-

In electroplating practice, the current is usually introduced from an external source and the anode is the positive electrode and cathode is a negative electrode. The cathode is the electrode where the electrochemical reduction reaction occurs. The anode is that where the electrochemical oxidation reaction occurs.

The electroplating process uses an anode and a cathode. In electroplating, the metal dissolved from the anode can be plated onto the cathode. The anode is provided with direct current, oxidizing and dissolving its metal atoms in the electrolyte solution. Titanium (Ti), Zirconium (Zr), Niobium (Nb) and Tantalum (Ta) are the valve metals that form stable thin oxide layer on the surface which protects the underlying metals from further corrosion in most of the harsh environments.Their superior corrosion resistance along with the hardness make these metals suitable for various industrial applications. Acidic fluoride media are encountered in nuclear reprocessing and in mud acid treatment of oil-well bores, and valve metals and their alloys are recommended as material of construction in these applications.

Although valve metals exhibit an excellent corrosion resistance in most media, they are attacked by acidic fluoride media or concentrated acids. The extent of corrosion of these valve metals depends on the solution composition, and in the case of their alloys, the material composition as well. For example, in boiling nitric acid, Zircaloy is reported to exhibit higher corrosion resistance than commercially pure (CP) Ti, Ti-Ta and Ti-Ta-Nb.
