A platinized titanium anode is simply a titanium anode coated with platinum or platinum metal oxides. Platinized titanium anodes act as inert anodes and are non-consumable and long lasting.

Platinum is used in electrochemical cells because it is resistant to oxidation- it will not easily react, which makes in excellent as an electrode. Platinum, the most plentiful of the platinum group metals, has many uses due to its resistance to corrosion. In addition, it is extremely useful as a catalyst for oxidations, such as for the production of sulphuric and nitric acids.  Also it is for hydrogenation as in the production of many pharmaceuticals and chemicals. The important factor for a quality water ionizer is the material of the electrodes (Platinized Anodes and Platinized Cathodes). Most good ionizers on the market use electrodes made of platinum plated with grade one titanium. Titanium will not dissolve in ionized water.

How does an alkaline water ionizer work?

A water ionizer works on the simple principle of electrolysis. Any type of water ionizer has two electrodes put into a container having two chambers separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The two electrodes – positive and negative, are put into two separate chambers and current is passed through them. Ionization process takes place on passing of the current through the electrodes. The dissolved minerals get attracted either to the positive or negative electrode and gets stick to their surfaces. Thus one of the chambers will have acidic water while the other will have alkaline water. The alkaline water is for consumption purpose, whereas the acidic water is for disinfecting or sterilizing purposes.

Positive Side: Platinized Titanium Anode

Positively charged ions gather at the negative electrode to create reduced water, which concentrates available alkaline minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium from the source water. This alkaline ionized water is drawn for drinking and cooking, through the main stainless steel spout.

Negative Side: Platinized Titanium Cathode

Negatively charged ions gather at the positive electrode to make oxidized water, which concentrates acid minerals such as nitrates, sulfides, chlorides, and fluorides from the source water. This acid ionized water has a countless of external uses. It is discharged into the sink.

The best water to drink is alkalized or ionized water, which is produced by running normal tap water over a positive (platinized anode) and a negative (platinised cathode) electrode. This creates positive and negative ions in the water that are then separated creating two different waters, one that is alkaline and one that is acidic.

Alkaline water is for flushing out internal toxins, scavenging free radicals, and oxygenating the body. Acid water, which is really a by-product of ionizing water, can be used externally for cleansing the skin, cleaning any surface and feeding your plants.

Most good ionizers on the market use electrodes made of platinum plated titanium. Titanium will not dissolve in your ionized water as the cheaper metals like stainless steel does. The ionizer uses grade 1 titanium (as per ASTM Standard) electrodes to be plated with a good electrical conductor. Stainless steel was used for Water Ionizer electrodes in the late 1980's and was found not be a suitable material because they did not last more than a  few years.
