By combining platinum and titanium, dimensional stability is possible. Both metals offer optimal parameters for Electro plating. Platinum has a very low specific electrical resistance. Titanium’s corrosion resistance is outstanding. The breakdown voltage for titanium in electrolytes containing chloride, for example, is between 10 and 15 V, depending on the pH value. This is significantly higher with niobium (35 to 50 V) and tantalum (70 to 100 V).

Titanium does have disadvantages when it comes to corrosion resistance in strong acids, such as sulphuric, nitric, hydrofluoric, oxalic and methane sulphonic acids. However, titanium is still a good option because of its mechanical workability and price.

Improvements to Platinum Plating Technology:-

In the manufacture of most platinum electroplated titanium, the titanium is first chemically etched to form a surface with reentrant angles – to aid the mechanical adhesion of subsequently applied coatings. Even this simple process of chemical roughening has involved much development.

The best water to drink is alkalized or ionized water. It is produced by running normal tap water over a positive (platinized anode) and a negative (platinized cathode) electrode. This creates positive and negative ions in the water that are then separated creating two different waters. One that is alkaline (positive side) and one that is acidic (negative side).

Alkaline water is for flushing out internal toxins, scavenging free radicals, and oxygenating the body. Acid water, which is really a by-product of ionizing water, can be used externally for cleansing the skin, cleaning any surface and feeding your plants.

Most good ionizers on the market use electrodes made of platinum plated titanium. Titanium will not dissolve in your ionized water as the cheaper metals like stainless steel does. The ionizer uses grade 1 titanium (as per ASTM Standard) electrodes to be plated with a good electrical conductor. Stainless steel was used for Water Ionizer electrodes in the late 1980's and was found not be a suitable material. Because they did not last more than a few years (maximum 6 months).

Advantages of Platinized Titanium Anodes:-

Platinum has the advantages of electrochemical inertness, mechanical strength, workability and favorable electrical conductivity. However, it is prohibitively expensive.

A water ionizer works on the simple principle of electrolysis. Water ioniser has two electrodes (Anodes and cathodes) put into a container having two chambers separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The two electrodes - positive and negative, are put into two separate chambers and the current is passed through them. Ionization process takes place on passing of the current through the electrodes. The dissolved minerals get attracted either to the positive or negative electrode, therefore one of the chambers will have acidic water while the other will have alkaline water. The alkaline water is for drinking purpose, whereas the acidic water is for disinfecting or sterilizing purposes.

The key factor for a quality water ionizer is the material of the electrodes. Most good ionizers on the market use electrodes made of platinum plated titanium Grade 1. Titanium will not dissolve in ionized water as the cheaper metals like steel. The ionizer uses grade 1 titanium electrodes to be plated with a good electrical conductor with longevity built to last 10 years that will also not dissolve during electrolysis.
