Ions are electrically charged atoms or molecules found in water that have either a net negative or positive charge. For many applications that use water as a rinse or ingredient, these ions are considered impurities and must be removed from the water.

Water Deionization Process:-

Among all common water filtration methods, the process used for removal of all dissolved salts from water is referred to as deionization. Deionization requires the flow of water through two ion exchange materials in order to affect the removal of all salt content.

The terms demineralization and deionization are used somewhat interchangeably by the industry. While the term demineralization is generally better understood, deionization is especially suit.

Platinized Titanium Anode and Cathode for Water Ionizers

A water ionizer works on the simple principle of electrolysis. Water ioniser has two electrodes (Anodes and cathodes) put into a container having two chambers separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The two electrodes - positive and negative, are put into two separate chambers and the current is passed through them. Ionization process takes place on passing of the current through the electrodes. The dissolved minerals get attracted either to the positive or negative electrode, therefore one of the chambers will have acidic water while the other will have alkaline water. The alkaline water is for drinking purpose, whereas the acidic water is for disinfecting or sterilizing purposes.

The key factor for a quality water ionizer is the material of the electrodes. Most good ionizers on the market use electrodes made of platinum plated titanium Grade 1. Titanium will not dissolve in ionized water as the cheaper metals like steel. The ionizer uses grade 1 titanium electrodes to be plated with a good electrical conductor with longevity built to last 10 years that will also not dissolve during electrolysis.

PLATINIZED TITANIUM MESH ANODE FOR ELECTROLYSIS

In organic and inorganic chemical industry platinum is widely used as the anode and Cathode in a number of electrochemical processes. Platinum is preferred on an anode's outer surface because it is highly resistant to corrosion and can ensure current flow in most electrolyte media without leading to the formation of an insulating layer on itself. Because it doesn’t corrode, it doesn’t produce corrosion products and hence the consumption rate is extremely low.

 

Platinum is the most active metal for any electro chemical or electrolysis process due to its current conducting property. Platinum being the most costly material logical utilization of Platinum for the greater value ensures economical solution. Platinized Anodes is none but a rational utilization of platinum by plating limited quantity on to titanium to achieve the same result as using platinum metal.

 

Platinized Titanium anodes or Platinized Titanium electrodes can be operated at very high current densities. 75Amps per dm² are typical. All of the current flows from the platinum plated / coated portion of the anode surface.

 

For quantitative electro-chemical analysis in laboratories, Platinum Electrodes of various types are used. Generally, Electrodes are made of platinum and Iridium alloy for added mechanical strength which ensure long period of trouble free service. Electrode are usually made of expanded mesh having opening size 7 mm x 13 mm. This provides bigger surface than area equal weight of plain or perforated platinum sheet and allows the electrolyte to circulate much more easily. For most electro-chemical analysis, expanded mesh cathode is most satisfactory while a small size of similar anode is used if an anode deposit is required.

What is the role of Platinum Anodes in Electrolytic Production of Chemical?

It is necessary to use an inert electrode, such as platinum, because there is no metal present to conduct the electrons from the anode (Positive Electrodes) to the cathode (Negative Electrodes). Oxidation occurs at the anode (Platinum Plated Anode) and reduction at the cathode (Titanium Cathode). In chemistry and manufacturing, electrolysis is a technique that uses direct electric current (DC) to drive an otherwise non-spontaneous chemical reaction. Electrolysis is commercially significant as a stage in the separation of elements from naturally occurring sources such as ores using an electrolytic cell or Electrolyzer.

Tiaano Platinised Titanium Anodes are most suitable for electro plating (Metal Finishing). The behaviour of platinized titanium ‘slave’ or ‘auxiliary’ anodes in electroplating is described, with particular reference to use in the plating of gold, rhodium, nickel, copper, tin and chromium. Preceding this survey some characteristics of commercially available platinized titanium are considered, including method of preparation, overvoltage, composition and platinum thickness. The results of accelerated laboratory tests to define limiting conditions of use are given, and durability is contrasted with that of alternative experimental noble-metal-coated refractory metals. Degradation of anode surfaces encountered in some practical applications is attributed to platinum dissolution resulting from reaction with particular organic additives, but in some circumstances an undermining of the coating as a result of superficial dissolution of the titanium may occur.

Platinised titanium anodes were the first coated electrodes to be marketed, and in many applications they have been displaced by dimensionally stable oxide coatings that have been highly optimised for the particular electrolyte. However, there remains a market for anodes which can be used in relatively small scale processes and this could be met by high performance, platinised titanium anodes. Indeed, the number of such applications in electrosynthesis and environmental processing is expanding. It may be timely, therefore, to re-examine the manufacture and performance of platinised titanium anodes and to consider using platinum alloys for nonspecific applications; for example, platinum/iridium coatings on titanium are known to have superior properties in some applications.
